"I'm thankful for the people of Ferrybank' - Mandarin Palace managers retire after 20 years

Tommy and Fei are retiring after 20 years at the helm of Mandarin Palace.

The managers behind one of Waterford's most popular restaurants are bidding adieu after 20 years of service.

The Pang family of The Mandarin Palace are retiring at the end of the month. An online statement reads: "After 20 years at the Mandarin Palace in Ferrybank, Tommy Pang, his family and Fai would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all of their customers for the incredible support and friendship they have received over the years."

From Tuesday September 1, the restaurant will be managed by Helen Meyler and her husband Mark McMahon.

According to the Ferrybank Community Newsletter: "The bar will continue to operate throughout the changeover, so there will be no disruption to the running of the bar going forward."

Tommy Pang told the Waterford News & Star that the time was right to hand over the reins, commenting: "It's not something we take lightly."

The Ferrybank area has been hit hard by the lack of amenities and the ongoing roadworks linked to the North Quays Strategic Development Zone.

Over the last few years, a number of businesses have shuttered in Ferrybank, namely The Village Bar and Spar.

Tommy said: "People have to understand that if they don't use it, it won't be there."

He urged locals to make the most of any and all facilities in Ferrybank: "Six thousand people live in Ferrybank. If 1% use it then that would do it."

Tommy wished all the best for Helen and Mark and again thanked all the customers over the last two decades for their support: ""I'm thankful for the people of Ferrybank."
