After just missing out on qualifying for the Olympic games in Paris, Waterford boxing star Kelyn Cassidy was back in the ring at the National Stadium in Dublin on Saturday last where the Ballybeg native claimed a fourth consecutive National Elite title.
In what Cassidy described as “a year full of extreme emotions”, he produced a stunning display of boxing to beat Dublin’s James Whelan 5-0 to lift the crown for a fourth year in succession.
“2024 closed out in style,” exclaimed the National champion on his social media in the aftermath of another National title.
“After a year full of extreme emotions, last night I told myself that no matter how hard life gets, keep showing up, keep knocking on the door, and someone has to answer.
“This morning showed that waking up as a four times National Elite Champion. Huge congratulations to my opponent James Whelan as he pushed me right to the bell. I’ve nothing but respect.” Cassidy also paid tribute to his sponsors. “It goes without saying, a big thanks to my sponsors Waterford City Ford, Kiely Gaule Financial Services, Lisduggan Credit Union, and the Causeway Group, for backing me through and through.
“To everyone for the support over the last few days weeks and months, I really appreciate it. I hope you enjoyed the year following me. Thank you and it’s brilliant to have another Irish title back in the Déise.”
