Waterford’s summer came to an emotional end at Croke Park on Saturday afternoon, as two extra-time goals from Kilkenny’s Katie Nolan ruthlessly extinguished the Déise’s All-Ireland dreams.
The sides could not be separated in normal time in a game that ebbed and flowed throughout, but once again Waterford were left to curse missed opportunities as their rivals marched on to the All-Ireland semi-finals at their expense - handing them a fourth one-score defeat of 2026 in the process.
While the Déise were seen by many as narrow favourites for this encounter, history between Waterford and Kilkenny certainly suggested the opposite - ten championship meetings between the sides since 2015, and just one win for Waterford.
Waterford came into the clash seeking their first goal of this year’s All-Ireland Championship, against a Kilkenny side who had already plundered 15 in five outings.
Neither side could establish a real foothold in the opening exchanges, but it was the Déise who commenced the scoring after 4 and a half minutes as a fine pass from Annie Fitzgerald allowed Mairead O’Brien to get inside past Niamh Deely and dissect the posts.

Laoise Forrest and Rachael Walsh started brightly snuffing out any danger, and that allowed Beth Carton to swivel and double the advantage moments later. It took Kilkenny 12 minutes to open their account, but it was worth the wait as Aoife Prendergast struck a special effort from distance to reduce arrears.
It was soon a level game as Laura Murphy dispossessed Keeley Corbett Barry and she drove forward to tap over. Upping the intensity, the Cats hit the front midway through the first half as Prendergast pointed her first free of the afternoon, before adding another within a minute.
Waterford needed a score to settle and it arrived right on time via Orla Hickey as she found the target from midfield, but a fine effort from Asha McHardy allowed Kilkenny to momentarily keep them at arm’s length.
Carton’s first free made it a one-point game again, and she levelled affairs at 0-5 apiece on 20 minutes when sending over another having been fouled.
A foul on Lorraine Bray allowed the De La Salle star to notch a third on the spin, but a free-heavy first half was ensuing - Prendergast landing another from a difficult angle to level matters for the third time.
A Clodagh Carroll delivery caused the world of panic for Kilkenny netminder Aoife Norris, but she was able to breathe a sigh of relief as the sliotar bounced narrowly wide. Waterford forwards didn’t get much ball to hand, but when they managed it - Annie Fitzgerald was lively, producing a fine point under pressure.
On 29 minutes, Waterford were afforded a golden opportunity. Great play from Bevin Bowdren freed Bray and she played Abby Flynn in on goal. Flynn got inside Caoimhe Dowling and looked to square to Fitzgerald, but she was dragged back by the Kilkenny captain and referee Joseph Mullins pointed to the penalty spot.
Up stepped Carton, but with Norris stranded - her strike flew left and wide leaving many in Croke Park perplexed. Four minutes of additional time were called, but despite the penalty setback - the Déise were finding gaps, and Eimear O’Neill was on hand to raise another white flag.
A Laura Greene response kept Waterford on their toes, before Kilkenny yielded a goal chance of their own - a Sarah Barcoe strike dropping short and it was seemingly dealt with by Brianna O’Regan, but she had to be fast off her line from the break to deny Steffi Fitzgerald the opportunity.
As half time loomed, Waterford worked the sliotar with far more poise - Bray finishing off a well-worked move and as the whistle sounded, they were in the ascendency, deservedly leading 0-9 to 0-7.

The gap was back to one as Prendergast immediately notched her fifth point upon the resumption, and it was 0-9 apiece on 33 minutes as Barcoe swivelled to yield a sweet score.
Laura Murphy was causing plenty of problems for Waterford, and her second score tipped the scales back in favour of the Cats as they started the second period much brighter. Carton’s fifth settled Déise nerves and made it honours even for a fifth time, and the same player again capitalised on Kilkenny’s ill discipline to restore the slenderest advantage.
A real tense affair had developed as neither side took much risk given what was at stake, as another excellent strike from Barcoe established further deadlock going into the final quarter. An uncharacteristic wide from Carton emphasised the nerves on display, before the unmarked Murphy made it advantage Kilkenny again.
Barcoe began to get the better of her individual battle with Vikki Falconer, allowing the clinical Prendergast to open up a two-point lead. O’Neill teed up Orla Hickey to cut the gap to one, and it remained all to play for going down the home straight.
The Déise let the handbrake off as sweeper Laoise Forrest was sent upfield, but that opened up space and who better than Barcoe to capitalise. An impressive take and point from Annie Fitzgerald kept matters in the melting pot, as the possibility of extra-time was on every lip at Croke Park.
The Déise drew level for the seventh time on 56 minutes as a superb ball from Carton allowed the excellent O’Neill time to turn and find the target. Every possession became all the more crucial, as substitute Claire Doheny was first to the breaking ball to make it advantage Kilkenny with a minute to go.
Maggie Gostl entered as Waterford searched for the required score to draw level. Four added minutes were sounded, as a Hickey attempt dropped short and was batted away by Norris.
The Déise needed something and were ever grateful as they were awarded a harsh close range free as Laura Greene was adjudged to have stood on the ball, which allowed Carton to step over and slot over another. Having consistently been on the wrong end of tight margins, the question remained whether that fate would meet Waterford again or if they could find a winner.
A Bray strike went agonisingly wide with 30 seconds left, and with nails bitten off at the other end - Steffi Fitzgerald couldn’t find the target at the other end. With a chance developing and Annie Fitzgerald racing onto a loose ball, Joseph Mullins sounded the final whistle - and at 0-15 each, extra time would decide who marched on to the semi-finals.
Fitzgerald needed no time to channel those frustrations as she immediately scored at the start of the first extra period, before a massive let off as Laura Murphy flashed a goalbound effort left and wide.
The goal threat didn’t disappear however as Steffi Fitzgerald was quickly in behind on 62 minutes, her effort was brilliantly blocked by O’Regan but it went straight to substitute Katie Nolan who finished emphatically to the top corner for the game’s opening goal. A deadly accurate free from Prendergast then created a sudden uphill battle for the Déise.
The defending from the likes of Caoimhe Dowling and Angela Carroll was tremendous for Jimmy Meagher’s side, though a Carton free did close the gap ever so slightly. An inspirational score from Rachael Walsh saw her drive into a pocket of space and find the radar, and Waterford’s mountain suddenly seemed surmountable.
An incredible block from Keeley Corbett Barry then denied Nolan what looked like a certain second goal, but Prendergast made no mistake from the requisite ‘45. As has threatened to be the story of 2026, there was no shortage of chances for the Déise but they couldn’t convert them to scores - as the Cats led 1-17 to 0-18 going into the second extra period.

Kilkenny looked to have more in the legs, but the same couldn’t be said of Abby Flynn as she went on a spectacular run toward goal - however her pass was too high for the unmarked Gostl. It was brought back for a free, and Carton’s ninth score tilted the scales once more.
Terrace talk shifted to the potential for penalties to separate the sides, but another magnificent free from Prendergast quickly dispelled that notion.
Déise dreams were fast fleeting, and on 76 minutes - they were brutally extinguished. Open country appeared in front of Steffi Fitzgerald who bulldozed toward goal, and who better than Nolan to square to - she blazed to the net and it was goodnight Waterford.
Or was it? The game that kept on giving saw Waterford land a sudden lifeline on 78 minutes. A lofted free fell fortuitously into the path of Maggie Gostl, and she pulled to the net to make it 2-18 to 1-19.
With two points in it, the Déise threw the kitchen sink at it - but it was too little too late, and a fitting wonderstrike from the star of the show Laura Murphy put the cherry atop the cake for Kilkenny.
Waterford’s All-Ireland dreams extinguished, despite a gargantuan effort. So close, so cruel, yet again.
