Déise set for relegation battle after Armagh defeat

TG4 ALL-IRELAND SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

Armagh 2-15

Waterford 1-15

Waterford will have to win a relegation play-off if they are to remain in the TG4 All-Ireland Senior Ladies Football Championship after suffering their second group defeat, this time away to Armagh at the BOX-IT Athletic Grounds on Saturday.

Tomás Mac an tSaoir’s side travelled north knowing that only a victory would keep their championship hopes alive. That task was made all the more difficult following last week’s heartbreaking defeat to Cork in Cappoquin, where the Rebels snatched victory with the final kick of the game.

Waterford made the perfect start and settled quickly into the contest. With just seconds played, Áine O’Neill kicked a superb two-point score from a tight angle near the 20-metre line on the stand side.

FAST START BUT GOALS PROVE COSTLY

However, their early advantage was immediately wiped out. From the resulting kick-out, Armagh worked the ball forward and Kelly Mallon sent a dangerous delivery towards the square. Although the effort looked to be drifting wide, Laura Marsden kept it in play and finished low past Katelyn Gardner from a tight angle.

Waterford responded impressively. Kellyann Hogan produced a two-point score from a similar position to O’Neill’s earlier effort to restore her side’s lead. Lauren McConville levelled at the other end, and further scores from Mallon and Blaithin Mackin nudged Armagh in front.

The sides remained evenly matched in the opening quarter. Points from Maeve Daly and Brid McMaugh brought Waterford back level after 11 minutes, and they edged ahead again approaching the midpoint of the half when Eve Power won possession deep in her own half, sparking a move that ended with McMaugh pointing.

But Armagh’s strength lay in their ability to strike decisively, and their second goal arrived on 16 minutes. A well-worked move involving Emily Druse and Aoife McCoy unsettled the Waterford defence. Catherine Markey got a touch as the ball dropped into the danger area, and McCoy reacted quickest to fire to the net.

Waterford came close to a major response almost immediately, but Clare Walsh was denied by a fine save from Brianna Mathers. At the other end, Mallon kept the scoreboard ticking with a brace of points while Katie Murray replied for the visitors.

Gardner, who impressed against Cork, was again called into action, producing an excellent save to tip an Emily Druse effort over the bar. Nevertheless, Armagh carried greater threat, and a late free from Aimee Mackin ensured they took a 2-7 to 0-8 lead into the interval.

LATE COMEBACK FALLS SHORT

Waterford needed a strong start to the second half, and they showed determination to get back into contention. Hogan and Aimee Mackin traded scores early on, while Hogan added another effort to bring Waterford into double figures.

When Aoife McCoy extended Armagh’s lead to five, the task looked increasingly difficult, but Waterford refused to sit back. Scores from Hogan and Áine O’Neill reduced the deficit to a single point and reignited hope.

That momentum was checked on 40 minutes when O’Neill was shown a yellow card, resulting in a sin-bin period. Armagh took advantage during her absence, with Aimee Mackin, Caroline O’Hanlon and Kelly Mallon all landing important scores to re-establish control.

Waterford’s problems deepened when Eve Power was also sin-binned on 45 minutes, leaving them down to 13 players. Cassie Henderson added another point, stretching Armagh’s lead and putting them firmly in command.

To their credit, Waterford rallied strongly once they returned to full strength. With O’Neill back on the field, they put together their most sustained period of attacking play. Katie Murray and Lauren McGregor both raised white flags before a crucial breakthrough arrived.

Following excellent interplay involving O’Neill and McGregor, Maeve Daly burst through and rifled the ball to the net, bringing Waterford back within two points.

Substitute Chloe Fennell showed composure to convert a free and cut the gap to the minimum, setting up a tense finish. However, Armagh responded when it mattered most, with experienced campaigner Caroline O’Hanlon landing a crucial point to relieve the pressure.

Waterford still had one last opportunity to salvage something from the game when they were awarded a free on the 20-metre line. Fennell went for goal, striking the ball with power, but a slight deflection took it onto the crossbar.

Even had the effort found the net, time was not on their side, and Armagh were able to see out the closing moments and secure their place in the knockout stages.

For Waterford, it was a performance full of spirit and determination, but the concession of two first-half goals ultimately proved decisive. Their focus will now turn to the relegation play-off, where they must win to preserve their senior status for 2027.
