Waterford News and Star columnist Padraig Amond has been named Waterford captain for the upcoming season. The 36 year old recently signed a new multi year deal at the club after he shocked the world last season when he returned to the League of Ireland having spent many years in the English Football League system. It was an incredible debut season for the veteran as he scored 14 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions and proved himself to be an integral part of Keith Long’s squad. Amond was joint Golden Boot winner last and was nominated for the PFAI Premier Division Player of the Year whilst also named in the PFAI Team of the Season. Manager Keith Long has rewarded Amond’s loyalty and form as he made him his skipper in an announcement this afternoon ahead of their opening game of the season against Sligo Rovers this Saturday. Pádraig will be assisted by Darragh Leahy & Andy Boyle, who have been named as co vice-captains for the 2025 campaign.

Speaking on Waterford’s website, Keith Long says it was a no brainer to make Amond his captain. “It’s a no brainer really when you consider the experience that Pádraig has got. I’ve spoken on many occasions about Podge, and how well regarded he is in all facets of the game, from supporters to players, coaches, managers, and officials. I’m delighted to name Podge as our captain. He’ll be assisted by Darragh Leahy and Andy Boyle, along with one or two others. We have a leadership group at the club that drive standards in the dressing room. So Pádraig is the man that will wear the armband for this year, and I’m delighted to working with him for another year”.

Amond himself commented on the honour the armband brings, saying:

“It’s a really proud moment for me. When the gaffer told me, I was really proud to be leading a team managed by Keith Long. I’m delighted to be announced as captain. The lads know that they can come to me with anything they have, and if I can help with anything that I can give advice to I will.”
