Letter to the Editor: 'Not everything that comes out of the USA is bad for us'

Ireland would be a much poorer country without US investment here over the years.

Dear Editor,

In response to the letter of Angel Walsh (no relation) in her criticism of US tech investment in Ireland in the newspaper of May 5, I’d like to point out that those of us who grew up and left school in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s welcomed the opportunity of working in US companies in Waterford and across Ireland rather than taking the boat or plane to England for employment.

They have been generally good for us by providing well-paid jobs, good conditions and good work experience for many years.

It has also been good for the US companies, with Irish workers contributing to the growth of these companies by good work practices, by coming up with new ideas and by working efficiently.

A fair share of Irish workers were promoted to positions in the USA and Europe arising from their work in Ireland.

So not everything that comes out of the USA is bad for us. They do elect some strange presidents from time to time but they are there for a relatively short period and there are good controls that work most of the time on these presidents.

Just wait until after the elections later this year and Mr Trump will be trumped and brought back under control. The only danger is that he might do a “Putin” and declare some emergency that allows him to remain on in charge…he’s probably thought about that!

Ireland would be a much poorer country without US investment here over the years. Long may it continue.

Frank Walsh,

Dunmore East
