Inclusivity in Waterford recognised

Amy O'Riordan with Mayor of Waterford, Seamus Ryan
During a Mayoral Reception which took place in City Hall this week, the topic of inclusivity was discussed.
The reception was hosted by Mayor of Waterford, Cllr Seamus Ryan, in recognition of the organisers of Pride of the Déise.
Those present spoke on the importance of such events taking place in the city.

Speaking, Chairperson of Pride of the Déise Amy O'Riordan said: "We’re linked with the Waterford integration services who have introduced us to recent arrivals to the city. People fleeing persecution and violence because of who they are or who they love. More recently, we’ve noticed an increase of people coming over from the United States because of the Trump regime.
"Their resilience shows up that Pride is not just a celebration, but a protest. Its about solidarity across borders, across struggles, and the importance and freedom to be yourself.
"Earlier this year, careless comments made by our local TD caused real hurt and upset. At the time we highlighted how important it is for public representatives to educate themselves. Ignorance and fear will create a climate and gap where hate and prejudice will grow. We really believe that learning and teaching is going to really help combat discrimination and misinformation."
Mayor of Waterford, Seamus Ryan added that Pride of the Déise exemplifies resilience through struggle.
"Despite incidents of flag burnings, homophobic attacks and harassment, what has stood out is the resilience of this community.
"You have met those challenges with strength and dignity, and the people of Waterford have overwhelmingly stood with you. Shoulder to shoulder, we have shown that hate has no home here.
"Pride is a protest, that’s how it began, and that’s what it still is. In my eyes it will remain a protest until everyone has full rights," he said.
