Wetherspoons has officially closed it doors in Waterford city.

The UK pub giant announced last October that it was to put three of its locations around Ireland on the market, including the popular An Geata Arundel in the heart of the city.

The premises opened in 2022, and has since been a popular spot for patrons with its pocket-friendly food and drinks selection.

New signage was erected last week, announcing the imminent arrival of The Broadstreet Bar & Grill to the premises, run by the Causeway Group.

Regarding pricing, the group told the Waterford News & Star that they will be "trying to keep it reasonable" and added that some drinks will still be the "cheapest in the city".

Locals this week were asked how they feel about Wetherspoons leaving, and although many are disappointed to see it go, there is excitement over what the Causeway Group can now offer at the site.

Frank and Bridget said, “We would go in for breakfast, coffee, tea and a hot chocolate. They had endless coffee and we would get the full breakfast for very good value. So we will miss it."

"We’ll go back in if they keep the breakfast," Frank quipped.

Jack Morrisey said, “I never went into Wetherspoons personally so I won’t miss it. It was a different age group to mine in there so my friends wouldn’t go in there either.

“But I think good people have taken it over now and my age group would go in a lot more and I’m looking forward to it. Wetherspoons wasn’t for everybody, but something new is going in now so now everybody can get involved and we’ll give it a go.”

Juckey Collins added, “I never really used it. But I would be disappointed to see it go, because a lot of people did use it and it had a reasonable price. When I passed through it in Waterford it looked lovely inside, so it’s good to see someone new going in."
