Christmas in Waterford was launched last week with a string of events that brought out the festive cheer across the city.
Traditions and Christmas go hand in hand, and we reflected on this last week during the various traditional festive happenings.
A real festive tradition is the annual launch of , the Waterford News & Star Christmas annual.

For many, the release of the publication marks the beginning of the Christmas season.
Speaking at the launch this week, Waterford News & Star editor Mary Frances Ryan said: "Our Christmas evening is very special.
"Firstly, , our Christmas annual for 2025 (is out), and I'm thrilled to see so many contributors here tonight, it’s really wonderful. So many of you have contributed in so many ways.
"It really is a great read and a great tradition in Waterford."
Also speaking on the night, Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr Seamus Ryan said the Festive Star hitting the shelves is the start of Christmas for so many who have become familiar with the publication over the years.
"This event has become really the start of Christmas in Waterford every year. These publications are full of pride of place, and they bring real joy to the people during the festive season and beyond."
Meanwhile, on Friday, Waterford's Winterval festival extravaganza was officially launched, alongside what has become another recognised Waterford tradition; the switching on of the Christmas lights.
Speaking at the event, Mayor Seamus Ryan said, "For me Christmas is family and I think it’s all about who’s with you around the Christmas table, that’s the most important thing.
"In my own household this year we have our new grandchild, Saoirse, and I’m looking forward to that more than anything."
