Councillors in West Waterford are calling for more traffic calming measures to be implemented on West Street in Tallow.

Cllr John Pratt told officials at this week’s sitting of the Dungarvan-Lismore District Council that there has been damage to car mirrors on the street, and the community is concerned.

He acknowledged the council has done work in the area but said it does not appear to be working.

“I know we have done some works out there regarding speed, but it is absolutely appalling. We really have a serious speed issue coming in there.

"Look, the locals themselves are up in arms, and I’m asking that we really look at it, and we have to do something,” said Cllr Pratt.

Cllr Pratt said he knows there is a reluctance to install ramps but that locals feel something must be put in place.

He said the gardaí have a role to play, and while a speed survey might be helpful, it would likely only prove what they already know.

“I think it’s a mix of both. We just need to relook at it in the round and see if is there more we can do,” said Cllr Pratt.

RESPONSIBILITY

Senior Engineer Gabriel Hynes said that there is a warning sign on the street, and drivers need to be aware of the speed limit.

He said they had already spoken to the gardaí.

“Outside of that, there is very little more we can do there. Drivers need to take responsibility and a bit of enforcement,” said Mr Hynes.

However, Cllr Pratt did not accept the senior engineer’s answer.

“I feel there is more needs to be done”, said Cllr Pratt.

Cllr Donnchadh Mulcahy said he agreed with his district colleague.

“I have to row in there because it is every day we are getting messages about West Street.

"I know you say you can only do so much, but we have to look at other measures if possible,” said Cllr Mulcahy.
