'We're sitting ducks' - antisocial activity ignites in Waterford City neighbourhood
A gas canister was found at the site of a recent fire in the Milbrook Court area.
People living in Milbrook Court have spoken out against the level of antisocial behaviour in their neighbourhood.
One resident spoke anonymously to Waterford News and Star about the deterioration of the area as youths, some as young as 11, are seen night after night setting furniture, wood and wheelie bins on fire.
In the last week, a street light has stopped working on the road, which appears to have galvanised the trouble-makers. Recently, gas canister was found amongst the detritus of the fires.
The resident said: "It's ridiculous. We're like sitting ducks. The green is destroyed and the smoke is in the air."
Unfortunately this is not the first time Milbrook Court has seen his kind of behaviour. Last October, the area saw the same kind of antisocial activity, with gangs converging on the green to set bonfires. As one person said: "The bigger the fire, the bigger the crowd."
The resident told the News and Star that they had been trying to contact the Community Policing Garda 'for months' over the situation. They have seen firefighters pelted with stones as they try to put out fires.
Right now, they are concerned over the response of Gardaí.
They said: "Guards need to be here when you call them. You call them at 8pm, they come at 9.10pm.
The resident said that one Councillor told them that the clean-up costs Waterford City and County Council '€1,000 a pop'.
They said: "We need someone in Council to take notice, even just one camera."
Councillors have previously raised the need for CCTV for the area to the Executive but, as of September 2026, none have been installed.
