'We need to get a grip' - Waterford Council regains Mount Suir apartments
Mount Suir has had myriad issues over the years.
At a recent meeting, Councillor Jim Griffin revealed that tenants in Mount Suir had received a letter from Clúid Housing.
"It says they're [Clúid] relinquishing their tenancies in Mount Suir apartments and it's going back to the local authority. The letter looked all au fait to me but if that is the case it's going to put severe pressure already on our local authority tenants."
He added: "I've also seen and heard why they're handing it back, which I won't repeat with the media here why they're handing it back. I don't know whether there's any truth to it but we need to get a grip because every councillor from the Tramore and City West Area has brought up Mount Suir apartments over years now, and we need to resolve it and find out what is going to happen in Mount Suir."
Senior Architect at Waterford City and County Council, Walter Holden, responded: "The units that were mentioned today were part of an unsold affordable scheme dating back to the mid-Noughties, unfortunately they were unsold under that scheme. There was an SLA (Service Level Agreement) between the local authority and the AHP, in this case being Clúid. The Department of Housing paid for those units that the local authority would now purchase, so they're in Waterford County Council's ownership.
"Our SLA with Clúid is finishing up so they will come back into our maintenance and the people will remain in the property."
Clúid Housing have been reached for comment.
