Waterford woman before court for stabbing her husband
Ms Foley grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed her husband.
A 33-year-old woman was sentenced in court last week for stabbing her husband in the family home.
Doctors allegedly told the victim that he was lucky to survive the incident.
33-year-old Shauna Foley, of 24 Bothar Mochuda, Lismore, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm and production of an article.
In May 2024, Ms. Foley was staying at a psychiatric hospital.
However, she unexpectedly returned to her and her husband's home on May 10, 2024, and found that her clothes had been placed in black bags outside the house. She also found newly bought locks in the house, which she deduced were to be installed on the front door of the family home to prevent her future entry.
An argument ensued between the pair, and Ms. Foley grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed her husband in the rear side of his body.
She was arrested and made full admissions.
In his impact statement, the victim said that the knife penetrated his colon. He said doctors told him that the stabbing barely missed his spine, and he was lucky to be alive.
“I feel a shell of the man I was,” he said
Ms. Foley has no previous convictions and has a history of mental illness.
Her defence counsel said that there is no evidence she planned the attack and that it was spontaneous. Her defence also said that the crime was committed “by an unwell person in the heat of the moment".
For the assault, the judge sentenced the woman to three years, suspended in full. For production of a knife, Ms. Foley was sentenced to three years, also suspended in full.
