Which dog passed through Bearna an Mhadra (the Dog’s Gap) in the Comeraghs and who was hanged at Cloch an Oidhre (the Heir’s Stone) along the Ardmore Coast?

If you are interested in the answers to questions like these, there's an event in Dungarvan Library, Co Waterford on Thursday, August 22 at 6.30pm for the “Where are you from? Placenames of the Déise” event which is organised by Waterford City & County Council’s Placenames Committee.

The event takes place from between 6.30pm and 7.30pm in Dungarvan Library

A taste of Waterford’s placename heritage will be showcased through a mixture of songs, poems and short talks. Items on the programme include talks on the Secrets of Placenames, the Placenames of Gaultier, placenames from the Comeragh Mountains and along the Waterford Coast, as well as information on the work of the Waterford Placenames Committee does and how to search online for maps, records and other valuable placenames resources.

The main feature of the event will be the first public performance of Ceol na gCloch, a newly written specially commissioned poem (funded by Creative Waterford) on the Placenames of the Déise by An Rinn poet Catherine Foley, as well as an accompanying video produced by Catherine and RoseAnn Foley. There will also be a chance to listen to some local songs that reference placenames of the Déise.

This Heritage Week event is being organised by Waterford City & County Council’s Placenames Committee, with support from Creative Ireland Waterford.

This is a free bilingual event with refreshments served. No booking required.
