Waterford mayor welcomes Taiko drummers from Germany

Waterford once again welcomed KiBo Daiko Taiko Drummers from Germany for last weekend’s Spraoi Festival.

The drummers are students at Taiko-Dojo Monika Volmer School in Hermer, a small town in the Märkischer Kreis region.

They previously visited in 2024, as part of the ongoing twinning partnership between Märkischer Kreis and Waterford, and their return was a fantastic addition to the Bank Holiday’s line-up of performances.

Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Liam Brazil welcomed the Taiko drummers to Waterford for their performance during the Spraoi festival.

“These talented and dedicated performers were an excellent addition to what was a fantastic festival and we were very lucky to be able to experience this art form in Waterford. Huge thanks must go to the team in Spraoi who were instrumental in facilitating the Taiko performances.

“I am very happy to see this latest connection between Waterford and Märkischer Kreis in Germany. I look forward to seeing our two regions continue to work together,’’ said Mayor Brazil.

Taiko has been an integral part of Japenese culture for centuries, used as part of religious ceremonies, to set the pace for troops going into battle and to motivate soldiers going to war, as early as 10,000BC.

Today, it can be heard as a soundtrack to all kinds of festivals and events.

In Waterford, these powerful and rhythmic instruments sparked curiosity and joy among visitors and locals alike.

The leader of the Taiko drummers, Ms Monika Volmer, said they were thrilled to return to Waterford and showcase a long-standing Japanese tradition.

“We are so happy to be able to return to Waterford. Everyone here has been so warm and welcoming. This wonderful festival has so many amazing acts and we are thrilled to be among them,” said Ms Volmer.
