Construction works on the North Quays

The Sustainable Transport Bridge in Waterford City will not be available for public use before mid-2026.

That is according to Director of Services for Economic Development Michael Quinn, who gave a rough timetable of construction to councillors at the February sitting of the Metropolitan District Council.

Several councillors raised issues with the construction, including Cllr Mary Roche, who called it the “bridge to nowhere.” She asked that it be opened for pedestrian use as soon as possible.

“I hate when we give people a stick to beat us with, but my concern is that bridge will be in place from April - June, whatever time this year. We have all heard of the road to nowhere, but the bridge to nowhere could be used for a long time," said Cllr Roche.

Mr Quinn said that would be the case for the next year and a half.

He said it would take between four to six months to install the bridge once it arrives, and the associated works.

It will take a further 12 months for the developer to do access works on their site, and only then will it be available for people to use.

“Unfortunately, for that time, it will be the bridge to nowhere, but we will be working with Ardcourt to minimize that timeframe as far as possible,” said Mr Quinn.

Cllr Jason Murphy asked if the bridge was on schedule and was told exact dates were unavailable just yet.
