Pavement project worth €500,000 suspended

A previously approved pavement upgrade project in Lismore worth approximately €500,000 has been suspended.

It is understood that plans were at an advanced stage and a contractor for the project was just days away from being appointed prior to the suspension.

Sinn Féin Councillors Conor McGuinness and Donnchadh Mulcahy have taken aim at the outgoing coalition government over the outcome.

Cllr McGuinness said: “We have been told that Transport Infrastructure Ireland are not now in a position to fund projects at Lismore and Carroll’s Cross, despite these having been approved earlier in the year.

"In the case of the Lismore scheme the Council has already gone to tender. This is no way to run a Government, questions need to be answered and funding needs to be restored."

Cllr Donnchadh Mulcahy added, “The €500,000 investment for Lismore has been fought for over many years and is badly needed. It includes a new road pavement from Lismore Bridge to the monument in the centre of the town. This coalition of Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Greens has shown an unprecedented level of negligence when it comes to rural transport.”

Dungarvan cycleway ‘will not happen’

The proposed Dungarvan to Youghal cycleway project has been met with further opposition, with local Cllr Pat Nugent saying the project won’t happen.

The route plans to cross Youghal Bridge and will run along the N25. Unlike traditional Greenway routes, the link will not be placed on a disused railway line.

Cllr Nugent said, “The cycleway to Dungarvan and Youghal is ill-thought out, and is costing €1.4 million at this point in time. In my opinion it will not happen. I don’t like wasting money because it can be spent so much better in the town and the community we have.”
