As the largest provider of plant, machinery and access equipment hire in Waterford and the South East, the company have engaged in a number of major sustainability efforts in recent years.

“There’s been big changes. I think it’s been worth it and we take great pleasure in knowing that we can make a difference,” Clem told the Waterford News & Star.

“We changed our fuel from diesel to HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), which was a big step because there was a certain amount of risk involved and a big cost.

“We have hundreds of engines that used to burn diesel, and now all burn HVO, so it’s colossal. Personally, it was well worth the effort, time and money."

Clem added, “There’s additional changes we’re making at the minute. We’re in the middle of changing our charging systems for all our electrical access equipment to solar. That’s going to be another massive step and it’s all very exciting that we can do our little bit for the environment.

“Our clients love it, and all our staff have really taken it on board, they can see the importance of it. I personally get a real kick out of it and a great sense of satisfaction.”

Metropolitan Mayor and Green Party Councillor, Jody Power, reflected on the significance of the company’s efforts, saying: “In recent years, Clem has been involved in an inspiring and crucial initiative, the neutralization of carbon emissions from all internal machinery hired.

“This initiative is not just a technical upgrade, it is a powerful statement of his company, and our commitment to combat climate change and to protect our environment.

“Clem Hire's pioneering efforts are a shining example of how Waterford can and will achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. By adopting HVO and solar energy, Clem Hire has shown that practical, impactful solutions are within our reach and pave the way for a cleaner, greener, future for us all.

“Their dedication has set a high standard and serves as a beacon for other companies and communities to follow. We are fortunate to have such a forward-thinking and dedicated individual leading these efforts."

The reception was the last of Cllr Power’s current term as Metropolitan Mayor. He spoke glowingly on his experience of hosting such events in City Hall during his tenure.

“For the people who come in here and get a mayoral reception, they’re really the cornerstone of our community and this city, and without them this place would be so much poorer.

“It is just a privilege for me to be able to do this and honour the people that really deserve it. It’s just a small token, maybe half an hour from me and some words, but hopefully it means a lot to people who get it.

“I think this is probably the nicest function of what a mayor can do."

Cllr Power added that his final reception being in recognition of Clem Hire was a perfect send-off.

“This is probably the best mayoral reception that I have given in the year that I have been here, to one that really truly deserves it.

"Clem has done an awful lot of work in the background, and nobody knew because he’s understated, so that’s the kind of guy that really deserves the recognition.

“Clem has left his mark and we’re so grateful for that.”
