Waterford man with 'an appalling number of convictions' given 10-month sentence for theft

The man appeared at Waterford Circuit Court.
A Ballybeg man with “an appalling number of previous convictions” has been given a ten-month prison sentence for stealing €233 worth of goods from Tesco.
Eddie Moloney (24) of Ardmore Park, Ballybeg, Waterford, pleaded guilty at a sitting of Waterford District Court before Judge Kevin Staunton to theft and threatening and abusive behaviour in a separate incident.
The theft occurred on April 23, 2024, at Tesco, Waterford Shopping Centre, Lisduggan, where the defendant stole €233 worth of candles and clothes.
The court was told the defendant had 33 previous convictions and is currently serving a sentence, with a release date in 2027.
Acting for the defendant, solicitor Ken Cunningham said his client has done well in custody, becoming an enhanced prisoner and attending an education programme.
He said his client wants to “put his head down and get on with his sentence” and “wishes to apologise to all those involved.”
Judge Staunton said that the defendant had an “appalling number of previous convictions, some very serious.”
He imposed a ten-month sentence for the theft and took the threatening and abusive behaviour into consideration.
The judge ordered the sentence to start on the day of sentencing, which means it runs concurrently to the one he is currently serving.
