Waterford man in court over burglary of pub and smashing off-licence window
Mullane's Pub and Number 21 off-licence in Waterford city were damaged during the incidents.
A man appeared in Waterford Circuit Court last week in connection with incidents of burglary and criminal damage, which took place in the city on July 25, 2024.
The incidents involved burglary to the Mullane's Bar premises on Newgate Street and smashing the window of Number 21 off-licence at The Glen.
James Foley (43), of Kilcohan Park, Waterford City, pleaded guilty to counts of burglary and criminal damage.
He committed the spate of offences last year alongside a woman who is since deceased.
In the early hours of the morning on July 25, 2024, Gardaí received a report of a male and female attempting to gain entry to the Mullane's Bar premises on Newgate Street. When gardaí arrived on the scene they found Foley attempting to lift the woman through a large broken window of the premises.
Also that morning, Gardai received a call from a proprietor of Number 21 off-licence.
CCTV footage showed the same man and woman attempting to break the premises’ large front window with a shovel head. The window was badly damaged, however, the pair were unable to gain entry.
It cost the off-licence approximately €3,000 to replace the broken window.
Foley has 26 previous convictions, a large number of which are matters relating to possession of drugs.
During last week’s court hearing, it was outlined that Foley was in a relationship with the woman at the time the offences were committed.
The court heard that the two had been on a “spree” and a “binge” together.
The man has been unable to accrue compensation for the broken windows, and the matter was adjourned until January 14 so that he could gather financial compensation.
