Waterford man accused of sexual assault to get retrial

The charges stem from allegations made by a woman who is now in her 30s.

A retrial has been called for a case involving a Waterford man in his late 50’s who was on trial last week for six counts of sexual assault.

The charges stem from allegations made by a woman who is now in her 30s.

The complainant described how she knew of the accused since she was just seven years old.

She had attended an organisation where the accused worked in a senior role.

The complainant alleges that the man sexually assaulted her across multiple locations in Waterford when she was between the ages of 15 and 16.

During the trial at Waterford Circuit Court recently, the jury deliberated for nearly 10 hours before informing Judge O'Kelly that a decision could not be finalised on all of the charges.

The matter subsequently was raised for mention on Friday at Waterford Courthouse to determine the next steps of the trial.

Tara Geoghegan, BL, who is representing the accused, indicated to Judge Eugene O’Kelly that a retrial has been directed.

The matter has now been adjourned until January 13, to determine a venue and timescale for the retrial.

The accused has been remanded on continued bail until that date.

Reporting restrictions are in place to protect the identities of the parties involved and the accused cannot be named.
