Waterford Junior School embraces the Christmas spirit with creative extravaganza

There were scenes of great festive celebration in one Waterford school over the holiday period.

Newtown Junior School celebrated a Christmas Extravaganza Day in the run-up to the holidays.

"There are moments in our festive calendar that remind us what truly matters—family, generosity, and the joy of childhood at Christmas. Wednesday, December 10th was one of those special occasions, as Newtown Junior School opened its doors for a magical Christmas Extravaganza Day that warmed hearts throughout the school community," said a spokesperson. 

Under the expert coordination of teacher Kathy MacDougald and her dedicated team, the school was transformed into a festive wonderland that celebrated both tradition and creativity. 

"Their months of careful planning and tireless effort were evident in every detail of the day’s proceedings," said the spokesperson. The afternoon began with the school’s Junior and Senior Infants taking to the stage for a charming Nativity play. Parents watched with pride as their little ones brought the timeless story to life, their earnest performances capturing the true spirit of the season. 

Following that, pupils from First Class through to Sixth Class showcased their musical talents with a beautiful medley of Christmas songs that had the audience singing along.

Beyond the performances, the Christmas fair proved to be a highlight in its own right. 

"The impressive array of handmade crafts, all created by the students themselves, demonstrated not only the children’s creativity but also the school’s commitment to fostering practical skills and entrepreneurial spirit in its young learners," said the spokesperson.

"What made the day particularly special was the overwhelming community support. Parents, grandparents, family and friends of the school came together in celebration, creating the kind of multigenerational gathering that is so important at Christmas," she added.

The school acknowledged the generosity of local businesses Code Coffee, Ardkeen Stores, and Activate, whose donations of sweet treats added "an extra layer of delight to the festivities".

In keeping with the season’s spirit of giving, a portion of the proceeds from the day will benefit The Helping Hands, a local charity that does vital work in the community.

"Our sincere congratulations to Principal Mr. Busher, Ms. MacDougald, her team, and all the staff and children at Newtown Junior School for creating an event that will linger long in the memories of all who attended," said the spokesperson.

"Days like these don’t happen by accident - they’re the result of dedication, creativity, and a genuine love for children and community."

She went on to comment that events such as the that remind people to "pause, celebrate together, and cherish the simple magic that our children bring into our lives".
