Waterford Gardaí are encouraging everyone to support this year's Go Purple Day which is An Garda Síochána’s National Day for awareness around domestic abuse.

This year's day falls on Friday, May 30.

A spokesperson for the Gardaí in an online post on their social media page noted: 'Go Purple Day aims to increase awareness of domestic abuse and the supports available to those experiencing it.'

"An Garda Síochána encourages you to get involved and support the Go Purple Day campaign by baking purple, sewing purple or wearing purple," said a spokesperson.

"Perhaps you might invite friends in for tea or hold a coffee morning in the office and all idea are welcome."

The Gardaí encourage people, above all else, to talk to one another about the issue of domestic abuse.

"Without realising, you might just give someone the crucial support they’ve needed to begin to share some of the fear they deal with alone," said the spokesperson.

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic abuse, contact 999 or 112 or your local Garda station. All calls are treated in strict confidence.
