Gardaí in County Waterford seized a number of vehicles recently, that were being driven by unaccompanied learner drivers.

In an online post the force said that in recent days Tramore Gardaí conducting Roads Policing checkpoints seized a number of vehicles being driven by unaccompanied learner drivers.

'Driving without a qualified driver is illegal and dangerous,' said the Gardaí in their post.

'It puts not only the learner at risk, but also passengers and other road users.'

Since December 2018, under the Road Traffic (Amendment) Act 2018 a vehicle can be seized if it is being driven by a learner driver without a qualified driver accompanying them.

The owner of the vehicle (if they allow a learner to drive unaccompanied) may also face penalties, even if they are not in the car at the time.

Learner drivers must always be accompanied by a fully licensed driver with at least two years’ experience, display L-plates clearly on the vehicle  and hold valid insurance.

When those rules are ignored vehicles can be seized on the spot.
