Sinead Ellen Griffin

Ahead of this weekend’s local elections the Waterford News & Star asked candidates to answer 11 quickfire questions to give the electorate a view of their priorities and what can be expected from them if elected.

Cath lab or airport?

Personally, I would have to say a Cath Lab for Waterford University Hospital. It’s a vital resources that can mean the difference between life and death. When it comes to your family or your loved ones you would want the best for them. We should be able to offer that here, to any patient who may require urgent help in Waterford.

Specific problem in your own electoral ward you would like to see addressed?

The wider availability of affordable housing and housing with adequate amenities and resources.

What’s your favourite album or book?

As cliché as it may be, Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark side of the Moon’ will forever be my personal favourite.

Why did you get into politics?

I found my personal life was being directly affected by the decisions of our current Government. I was marking ambitions down as pipe dreams due to the limitations I felt with the on going cost of living and housing crisis. Sometimes if you want something done, you need to do it yourself. I thought, it’s people in my situation that are not being heard and I felt I could at least try and push the conversation.

What’s your proudest achievement?

Working with Dr Rory Hearne over the last two or so years on various projects centered around the housing crisis and the detrimental effects that is having on people, both young and old. Entering a debate that I felt needed to be had and and speaking from a personal experience.

Potholes or cycle lanes – which would you invest in first?

Cycle lanes. During Covid I fell in love with cycling, particularly on our Greenway. It quickly became my main means of transport as a non driver and a previous full time walker. It’s a cost effective and environmentally friendly option that I think, given the resources and infrastructure a lot more people would be encouraged to take up.

Tea or coffee?

Coffee!

Your favourite blaa filling?

A good Blaa needs nothing more then Kerrygold butter.

Biggest political influence?

I have always been enthralled with former Senator David Norris. I can remember, even as a child being struck by his conviction and determination. Even through personal battles with illness he stood for what he felt was right. Often times being the sole person to speak for those who had been silenced. That takes courage and courage is a rare find.

Who makes the most dinners in your house?

My mother. She’s extremely talented when it comes to cooking.

What one thing would you most like to see change in Waterford during your term if elected?

I would love to see Waterford City become the bustling, energetic and thriving city I knew as a child. We are steeped in the most amazing history, we have a cultural area of the arts to rival anyone. We have produced some of the most influential artists. We have so much to offer and I truly believe that given the opportunity and the right input that can be reality for Waterford.
