A Waterford councillor has shared a birthday tradition, which honours the role of a local business in supporting a parish charity run.
Cllr John Hearne said in a post on social media that every year, his partner buys him a new pair of runners from Alfie Hale Sport in recognition of the sponsorship the business provides for the Frank Leahy run.
Cllr Hearne urged his community to support independent traders.
“Every year I'm humbled by the amount of people who wish me a happy birthday and it's deeply appreciated.
“And every year Marypat buys me a pair of runners for my birthday in Alfie Hales shop because we deeply appreciate their sponsorship of The St Paul's Parish Frank Leahy Run and the huge part the Hale family play in Waterford sporting life.
“So support our sponsers and support independent traders in Waterford . It's so important.
The St Paul’s Parish Frank Leahy Five Mile Run/Three Mile Walk takes place on Sunday, January 25 and raises funds for a range of charities.
