It was revealed last week that Waterford City and County Council spent €63,000 on dog poo bags in 2023.
Cllr Damien Geoghegan raised the question at a recent meeting of local councillors.
“We do provide a decent service with dog bags for people to use at various different locations throughout the town, throughout the county and indeed throughout the city," he said.
Dawn Wallace, Senior Executive Officer in the Council’s Environmental Department, said that 1.6 million bags had been purchased by Waterford Council.
“They are bought from a provider in Ireland,” Ms. Wallace said.
“We are looking at how we can make savings on those but one of the problems that we have is the containers themselves only take a particular type of bag, so we are tied to those."
