Waterford Civil Defence was acknowledged in a recent report presented to members of Waterford City & County Council.

In his most recent monthly report to the members, local authority Chief Executive, Sean McKeown, informed the members of recent events and activities involving the civil defence members.

The report was presented in July and in it Mr McKeown made reference to the Civil Defence involved in the build up to the Waterford Viking Marathon and other xommunity assistance events including the annual Cemetery Mass in St Mary's Cemetery, Ballygunner.

The organisation also provided first aid and communications support at the Corpus Christi Procession, from the Sacred Heart Church to the Cathedral.

With regard to the Viking Marathon, Mr McKeown said: "With the support and help from other counties we deployed 11 Ambulances, eight Response Jeeps, three Minibuses and two bicycles all to support our medical response along the race route."

As part of the buildup to the Viking Marathon a number of training exercises took place including a communications exercise along the Greenway, a search and rescue, stretcher handling and evacuation exercise and casualty handling exercise.

'None of these events would be possible without the dedication and support of our Waterford Civil Defence Volunteers,' noted Mr McKeown in his report.

'It was fantastic to see our volunteers in action on the day of the marathon and how professionally they worked to support the event,' he added.
