Waterford-born author pens novel about war, family and history
The book is inspired by the author's family history.
A Waterford-born writer has penned his first novel, a historical fiction book titled: 'The Children Cried while the world looked away'.
Michael Kennedy wrote the story inspired by his own family histories in both Ireland and Wales, where he resides today.
He was born Michael Williams on Gashouse Lane (aka Johnstown Avenue) and later moved to Wales, setting down in the town of Mumbles in Swansea.
The books is set in the early 20th century and follows an Irish woman and Welsh man falling in love amidst the World War One, War of Independence, the Irish Civil War and the Spanish Civil War.
He was inspired by his own memories of his grandmother: “My grandmother and my mother (2 years of age at the time) lost a husband and father who were buried far away in Thessaloniki, Greece in the First World War.”
Michael went on: “I feel the world is still not listening, it hasn’t learnt from past wars and that its always the innocent children that suffer and also how it dramatically affects the families.”
'The Children Cried while the world looked away’ is available in The Book Centre.
