Two speeding cases on same Waterford City road heard on same day
The two speeding matters both occurred on the Cork Road in Waterford.
Two separate speeding cases, which occurred on the same road, were heard at a recent sitting of Waterford District Court.
A 22-year-old woman was fined €100 for a speeding offence earlier this year on the Cork Road, Waterford.
Laylah Latifah Kaba (22), of 126 Hennessy's Road, Waterford, was charged for driving 19km an hour above the 50km speed limit on the Cork Road in February of this year.
Ms. Kaba has no previous convictions and offered no defence for her actions in court.
"If I'm in trouble, I'm in trouble," she told the court, saying she felt there was no use defending her actions when she had, in fact, been speeding.
A 35-year-old man was also present in Waterford District Court for driving above the speed limit on the Cork Road, Waterford.
Donal Joseph Barry (35), of Ballinwillin, Lismore, County Waterford, was charged for driving 23km an hour above the speed limit, at 73km/hr, on the Cork Road on November 19 of last year.
Mr. Barry had not received a fixed charge notice in the post, his solicitor told the court, and would have paid the notice in time had he received it.
Mr. Barry lives alone and has done for the past five years, so he would have received the fixed charge notice had it been sent by the courts, his solicitor said.
The state's representative, Sergeant Alan Hayes, questioned Mr. Barry on this point, asking Mr. Barry if he finds it convenient that his first and only time having trouble with his post in the past five years was for a fine notice from the courts.
Mr. Barry told Sergeant Hayes that he "can't control the post" and would have paid the fixed charge notice had he received it.
Judge John Cheatle said he would give Mr. Barry the benefit of the doubt in this case, and struck the matter out.
