Tick, tick, tick for Clock Tower and Waterford's missing mine
Works are continuing along the North Quays.
The historic Clock Tower was described as being in a "sorry state" by the Metropolitan Mayor. At the recent Metro meeting, Councillor Adam Wyse spoke about the build-up of brown dirt on the structure.
He said: "I don't think it's acceptable just because there's work going on on the North Quays that we should leave the Clock Tower, an iconic part of Waterford, in the sorry state it is now. I'd like to see that improved."
Cllr Wyse also asked about a relic from World War II that used to be perched near the tower. He said: "We had a WWII mine on the Quay next to the Clock Tower for years and years. It was taken away for the works but now that the works are nearly finished, can we find that mine?"
He added: "When people are coming over the new Sustainable Transport Bridge that mine should be there, explaining the history of Waterford. I've asked three different people who can't seem to find it. That sounds dodgy enough to me."
Director of Services Michael Quinn said that he'd enquire into the mine.
On the Clock Tower, he said: "There has been difficulty getting access because some of the structure inside is collapsed. So it's something we are trying to sort out."
He said it would be dealt with "immediately when BAM are finished on the South Quays and they hand it over to us because we don't want to be interfering with their site".
