'This is bizarre' - historic sign disappears from Dyehouse Lane

The cast iron sign has gone missing from Dyehouse Lane.

A commemorative sign has disappeared from Dyehouse Lane.

Cllr Eamon Quinlan (Fianna Fáil) pressed for the recovery of the sign at a recent Council meeting.

He said: "It's been brought to my attention that a large iron-cast sign on Dyehouse Lane, which was to commemorate the first ever social housing in Waterford City, built in the late 19th century... it's gone.

"Some people think it was robbed, some people think it's been mislaid, but it's gone."

He continued: "This was a very important part of local history. It was the foundation of social housing in Waterford City and I think it needs to be commemorated.

"The sign should be put back and put there by the Mayor to ensure that we honour the tradition of social housing in Waterford City."

A member of the Council Executive confirmed that the matter would be investigated, though there was uncertainty over which Department the matter falls under.

After some back and forth, Cllr Quinlan said: "This is just bizarre, it's a Council sign."
