University Hospital Waterford has had no patients waiting on trolleys in Emergency Departments during the first six months of 2024. It is just one of two hospitals in the country to achieve this.

Deputy Matt Shanahan was asked by the News & Star if UHW would be rewarded for their performance:

“There is no reward. The HSE does not reward efficiency. If it did this hospitals culture and SOPs would be mandated across the model 4 network. Instead this hospital and its staff are often lauded politically, but are otherwise left to get on with it as they are neither a favoured or problem child. That is all the system reacts to as does Government."
