Students in Waterford work to stamp out racism

Students from schools in Waterford will be the centre of attention at an awards ceremony event due to take place in Central Library, in Lady Lane, this week.
To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which was March 21, Waterford Anti-Racism Month invited primary and secondary school students across Waterford to engage artistically with the theme of 'Making Racism History'.
The awards ceremony relating to the competition will take place in Central Library, on Lady Lane, on Tuesday, September 24, at 11.30am.
Waterford Integration Services (WIS), Waterford City & County Council, Waterford Libraries and Europe Direct, Waterford invited primary school students to create a piece of artwork that related to the message and theme of the competition.
Secondary school students were were asked to mark the day - which was also World Poetry Day - by submitting a poem on the theme. The exhibition of the creative work will run from Monday, September 23, to Saturday, October 12, in Central Library.
Prizes for the initiative were sponsored by The Book Centre, Waterford.
Waterford Anti-Racism Month was an initiative of Waterford Integration Services and Waterford City & County Council aimed at extending the marking of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
The initiative includes activities coinciding with International Women's Day, St Patrick's Festival, Seachtain na nGaeilge, French Language Day and other days and festivals of note in addition to compiling a public calendar of theatre performances, film screenings and other cultural events that marked the theme.
