Status yellow weather warning issued for Waterford on Sunday

A status yellow rain warning is in place for Waterford on Sunday.

A status yellow rain warning has been issued for Waterford on Sunday by Met Éireann.

The national weather service is warning that heavy, persistent rain is predicted to hit Waterford, Cork and Wexford over the weekend.

Met Éireann is warning that localised flooding is possible all day on Sunday with poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions also forecasted.

Off the coast, a small craft warning is active on Friday, September 27, which will continue into the weekend with winds forecast to reach force 6 or higher.

On Sunday, while a status yellow weather warning is in place on shore, a status yellow gale wind warning is in place from Howth Head in Dublin all along the southern and western coast to Galway.

Winds could reach gale force 8 during this period.

Speaking to Waterford News & Star, Met Éireann meteorologist Rebecca Cantwell said that the weather conditions have been caused by a "low pressure system moving the south coat moving eastwards throughout Sunday. The warning we have out at the moment is a status yellow rain warning for the entire day on Sunday."

"The rain is going to start in the morning and will be fairly persistent through the day. It will be heavy at times, with heavy rain bursts so we are expecting heavy rain throughout the counties of Cork, Waterford and Wexford."

The Met Éireann meteorologist warned that strong winds are expected on Sunday in addition to the rainy conditions, "a mixture of rain and wind is going to make for a very unpleasant day on Sunday".

Met Éireann have urged drivers to be especially careful in the rainy conditions over the weekend, "with the heavy rain there is going to be poor visibility which will make for difficult travelling conditions, possibly with some delays and obstructions to travel".

The national weather service has warned that spot flooding is expected on roads in the south east due to the "intensity of rain that is going to be falling which will make driving conditions very hazardous".

Met Éireann has urged people in Waterford to keep an eye on their website to keep up to date on the latest weather warnings.
