A new static speed safety camera will be installed on the N25, on the outskirts of Waterford City, as part of the latest speed safety initiative from An Garda Síochána under the Government’s Road Safety Strategy.

The initiative aims to reduce speeding, which is the main contribution to road deaths and the static speed safety cameras have been proven to reduce speeding internationally.

Nine static speed cameras are expected to be fully operational nationwide by Autumn, this year, at a cost of approximately €2.4 million from the Garda budget.

The locations of the nine cameras have been selected on the basis of speed data and where fatal and serious road traffic collisions have occurred over the last seven years.

The camera to be operational on Waterford’s N25 will be located between Glenmore and Luffany. Road users will be advised of the location of the camera, when it’s in operation, through road signage.

The other eight cameras will be located on the N59 (Galway), R772 (Wicklow), N14 (Donegal), N80 (Carlow), Dublin (Dolphin’s Barn), N17 (Mayo), N22 (Cork), and N69 (Limerick).

In addition, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has requested that the Assistant Commissioner of Roads Policing, Paula Hilman, develop a business case for the introduction of a further 100 static speed cameras.

Speaking on the initiative, Assistant Commissioner Hilman, said: "Static speed safety cameras have been proven in other countries to be highly effective in changing driver behaviour and reducing speed, which is a key contributor to road deaths.

“Speed cameras slow drivers down. The lower speeds people drive at, the lower the number of road deaths,” she said.

The number of GoSafe speed vans will also increase from 55 to 58 in the coming weeks.

Site visits are ongoing to progress the engineering for the installation of the static cameras.
