Small businesses are being hindered by pedantic regulations, according to the Ireland South MEP at a recent event in Brussels.

MEP Cynthia Ni Mhurcú made the comments after speaking with Jenny Beresford, CEO of the West Waterford and Dungarvan Business Chamber of Commerce.

She said: "Government needs to get the message that small businesses are facing an unsustainable cost base.

"Whilst it may be a lofty ideal to introduce more sick pay, auto enrolment, increased minimum wage, and increased levels and types of leave - the bottom line is that someone has to pay for that.

"The burden is falling on small business owners and we have to be aware of that fact."

She ended: "There is no point in having an ever increasing minimum wage if there are no employers left to pay it."

There are a number of supports available for small businesses in Waterford, including support from Waterford City and County Council as well as the Local Enterprise Office.
