Significant updates on North Quays: Train station, Bridge, Clock Tower

North Quays

Progress on the North Quays has become increasingly visible to the public, with the Sustainable Transport Bridge, train station and the South Quays Plaza around the Clock Tower all showing progress.

Train station

The front elevation of the new train station is now clearly visible following the removal of scaffolding.

The northern plaza area of the station which provides bus and car drop off facilities as well as access to the new south east greenway, is progressing well, with the installation of curbs and paving.

The structure works to the train station will be completed in the coming months, including roofing, paving, rendering and the internal fitout.

However, there will still be significant mechanical and electric work to be done before the station is fully completed.

Waterford Council Senior Engineer Sean Dobbs said this week, “The station can only open once it passes through all the independent safety and compliance checks, and those will continue all through 2026 and into 2027."

The station is expected to open in 2027.

Sustainable transport bridge

The sustainable transport bridge is now fully fixed in place and the opening spans are working as they should.

BAM is continuing to open and close the spans regularly.

Over the coming months, crews will focus on finishing touches such as surfacing, glass panels, railings, lighting, seating, and architectural details.

The bridge is expected to be open in 2027.

South Quays Plaza

The plaza works around the Clock Tower are expected to be substantially completed later in the year, after which snagging and safety checks will be carried out in advance of opening to the public.

Once the plaza opens, there will be no public access from the plaza to the sustainable transport bridge until the bridge itself opens.

The plaza is expected to open next year.

Ferrybank infrastructure

On the Ferrybank side, all access infrastructure including new roads, cycleways and set-down areas are on track for completion early in the New Year.
