Residents living near Lacken Road were dismayed to awake on Sunday morning to find a huge amount of rubbish dumped in the area.

A video showing the scale of the dumping, which was captured by Cllr Frank Quinlan, shows a significant amount of rubbish, household items and Christmas decorations dumped just off the Tramore road near Ballindud.

Cllr Quinlan labelled the act as 'shocking'.

“It happened on Saturday night and on Sunday morning the residents in the area woke up to this mess, which is absolutely disgusting," he said.

"There's lots of rubbish dumped out here for our environmental inspectors to come out here on Tuesday morning after the bank holiday to clean up after whoever did this despicable act.

“To think that someone actually goes to the trouble of going out and dumping with no consideration for anyone in the area, it’s absolutely disgraceful."

A Waterford Council Environmental Inspector was subsequently contacted to scan through the mess for evidence.

Cllr Quinlan said that such dumping is becoming a more common occurrence, however, it is difficult to catch and identify the culprits.

“Fines need to be imposed, but it’s very hard to catch these individuals in the act because they go it in the middle of the night or early in the morning when people are asleep.

"They are cunning.

"They try to pick quiet locations, cul-de-sacs or just off sharp bends where they won’t be detected. On this occasion it occurred just off the main Tramore road, which was brazen."

Cllr Quinlan added: “We have four Environmental Inspectors in the city and county so it is very hard to catch these culprits in the act, especially on a bank holiday weekend late at night.

"Whoever did this should be ashamed of themselves."

Locals can report any incidences of illegal dumping at waterfordcouncil.ie
