The Environmental section of Waterford City & County Council issued 71 fines for littering in the first half of this year.

In his July monthly report to the members of the local authority before the summer break, Chief Executive of WCCC, Sean McKeown revealed that in the period from January 1 to June 26 this year, 44 fines of €150 each had been paid.

A large number of fines were issued under the Waste Collection Permit Regulations and nine directions under Section 14 of the Waste Management Act 1996 (WMA) were made.

A further seven Statutory Notices under Section 55 of the WMA were also made along with two notices under Section 18 of the same Act.

The report also revealed that 101 households were contacted regarding waste presentation while the total number of environmental complaints or reports received by the local authority for the aforementioned period amounted to 1,284.

Those complaints and reports were compiled of: Litter - 377; Waste Complaints - 789; Construction and Demolition Waste Complaints - 10; Air & Odour - 17; Noise - 35; Water Pollution - 23; and Agricultural Pollution - 33.
