Heavy flooding has been reported on roads across county Waterford following heavy rainfall in recent days.

In rural areas of the County, locals have experienced unexpected floods on roads which typically wouldn’t flood.

Speaking on the issue, Cllr John O'Leary said he was “baffled, surprised and absolutely astounded” to see such heavy flooding.

He added that he has been inundated with phone calls from locals reporting problems.

"I saw flooding on roads yesterday that I never witnessed before. The rain has been unbelievable" he said.

Senior Roads Officials at Waterford City & County Council also confirmed that ground crews have been seeing areas flooded which wouldn’t have experience flooding before.

Senior Executive Roads Engineer Maria Goff, said that crews are on the ground to tackle the issues.

She added that the Council needs increased investment in drainage to facilitate upgrading pipes and to construct additional concrete channels.

"We also need to look at flood mitigation measures off-road with landowners to slow down the flow of water coming onto the roads" Ms. Goff said.

Councillors in the Comeragh District commended the Council’s ground crews for their work in recent days.

Cathaoirleach of the District, Cllr John O’Leary, said, “we’re getting a good response and good service from the roads section.”
