Thursday, May 23, marked another milestone day for Waterford City as another major step forward was taken towards the completion of the new Sustainable Transport Bridge (STB) completeion.

In ideal conditions the second span of the STB, the central mid section, was lifted and placed into position by the sheerleg HEBO 9 crane.

The operation was the result of precise coordination between BAM, Waterford City and County Council, the Port of Waterford and the marine traffic authorities.

The second section was carried up-river by barge and the span’s arrival was a spectacle in itself, witnessed and captured by local drone operator Peter Grogan.

Mr Grogan's footage will form part of a special feature on RTÉ Nationwide later this summer.

A spokesperson for Waterford City & County Council commented on the works on Thursday, saying: "As part of a multi-day installation programme, today’s lift brings the vision of a walkable, cyclable link between the North and South Quays another step closer."

"With the imposing HEBO crane and support vessels like the Anteos working in tandem, the sight of this massive structure being lowered with millimetre precision was nothing short of amazing," she said.
