The N25 Safety Group has welcomed the announcement that the speed limit on the road will be reduced.

The group said the reduction was the result of extensive discussions and ongoing collaboration with Kilkenny County Council, An Gardaí Síochána and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

Speaking on behalf of the group, Bernie Mullally Chairperson said:

"Our committee appreciates the enormous effort made by An Gardaí, TII and Kilkenny County Council in implementing the reduction in speed on this dangerous section of road.

“This decision is the first step in improving safety on the N25, where 3 high collision zones have been identified.

“We will continue to work hard with all stakeholders to ensure that the remaining upgrades and remedial works are carried out, to mitigate against serious accidents and bring the N25 up to modern safety standards.”

The N25 Safety Group was formed following many years of calls to implement safety measures on the road, which has seen 84 deaths in the past 20 years and countless accidents and near misses.

It is estimated that more than 15,000 vehicles travel on the road every day, and that this exceeds the road’s capacity.

A public meeting attended by around 500 people was held at the Rhu Glenn Hotel in June.

The group says the speed reduction is a vital step in improving safety on the road and demonstrates the effectiveness of local groups, public representatives and national agencies working together.

But more needs to be done to make the road safe, and the group says they will lobby for further measures to be implemented.
