Ruth Purcell Healy (37), of Bishop's Field, Williamstown, Waterford, appeared via video link before Judge John Cheatle. 

On Tuesday, June 18, the mother of the late Matthew Healy, appeared in Waterford District Court for the first time in four months.

She has been receiving treatment at the Central Mental Hospital.  

Solicitor Ken Cunningham informed Judge Cheatle that Ms Purcell Healy has been deemed fit to attend court.

He confirmed that Ms Purcell Healy will be attending the court in person this Thursday, June 20, for the presentation of the Book of Evidence. 

It was Ms Purcell Healy's first appearance in court since she was charged with the murder of her son on February 13, 2024.

Matthew Healy was found unresponsive around midnight on February 9, 2024, near Rathmoylan Cove, Dunmore East. 

He was later pronounced dead at University Hospital Waterford. 

Six-year-old Matthew was a senior infant pupil at Faithlegg National School and his death unleashed a wave of sorrow across the country.
