Rosslare Europort is to experience capacity issues from today, Sunday, April 12.
A spokesperson for Iarnród Éireann issued a statement to Waterford News & Star and said that significant delays were expected once the Port reopened.
Protesters had set up a blockade at Kilrane, which is approximately a mile from Rosslare Europort.
That blockade was in place since early on Thursday, April 9.
"Only passenger traffic is currently being permitted to pass through," said the spokesperson.
He also said that for a period on Friday accompanied pharmaceutical freight was permitted through.
"But that has now stopped also, since yesterday afternoon," said the spokesperson, issued on Saturday, April 11.
"There is currently about a mile of a tail back of trucks," she added.
The spokesperson said the port will face challenges ahead as two ships are coming in late tonight into tomorrow morning.
"Once they off-load we will have no further capacity," she said.
"We will then have to turn ships back to wait on anchor out from the port or advise to go to an alternative port," she added.
"Once the blockades are lifted, it will take some time to get the port cleared before we can take any more freight in and the port may need to put restrictions on capacity during this time," said the spokesperson.
