Riverwalk extension plan welcomed by councillor in Waterford
Cllr Darcy said the expanded walkway would allow residents to walk or cycle safely from Ballinakill, Ardkeen, Passage and Cheekpoint, all the way into the city.
The modification of the local development plan to include a long-awaited extension to a riverside walk in Waterford has been welcomed by a local councillor.
The planned extension of the riverwalk between the city centre and Ardkeen was welcomed by Cllr Jim Darcy who has spent years advocating for the completion of what he described as "a key piece of infrastructure" for the local community.
Describing the recent modification of the development plan to include the project as "a major step forward", Cllr Darcy said it was the first step required to see the project completed.
Commenting on the matter Cllr Darcy said the expanded walkway would allow residents to walk or cycle safely from Ballinakill, Ardkeen, Passage and Cheekpoint, all the way into the city.
He said the continuous off-road route would significantly reduce traffic congestion and pollution, while providing a major amenity for the community.
Cllr Darcy said the proposal also carried particular benefits for families, workers and students.
The route would include a safe cycle path linking to the six schools in the area, which he described as "a positive addition" amid rising concerns about road safety and car-dependent school runs.
“At a time when we are ripping up roads to slow traffic and putting traffic at a standstill, this provides an off-road solution for walking or cycling to school or work safely,” Cllr Darcy said.
He also commented that beyond its practical advantages, the extension is expected to offer a scenic and accessible walkway for leisure, exercise, and family days out.
"It would be a huge boost to the local quality of life and help create a more connected, healthier community," he said.
