Residents in fear of children being killed on road

The incident occurred in the St John's Park area of Waterford City

On Friday morning, September 13, emergency services were called to the scene of a collision between two young boys and a female driver outside Scoil Lorcáin in Waterford City.

Luckily, the two children involved were not seriously injured.

Having learned that was the case and that the young boys would be ok, residents questioned the seriousness of what could have happened, and with heightened emotions and anger, they said nothing was being done about the traffic management in the area.

It's feared by the locals of St John's Park that a child will be killed on their way to or from school with the chaos of rush hour traffic.

The residents who spoke to Waterford News & Star on the morning of the most recent collision, noted that some changes had been made including having a designated area installed for parents to safely drop and collect their children.

However, they feel this is not enough, particularly with the volume of cars in the area during peak hours.

Residents wish for more changes to be put in place in the area whereby road safety and the children's safety are key. One suggestion from a local resident said somebody should be on hand from the area to assist with road crossing.

This incident is not the first of its kind in that area of Waterford City and the residents are now calling for a review of the traffic management in the area before a fatality occurs.
