Plans submitted for major school construction project

Planning application was submitted last week for the expansion of Gaelcholáiste Phort Láirge in Ballygunner.

The plans consist of the demolition of the existing temporary educational facility consisting of prefabricated single storey buildings, comprising of 14 classrooms, a staff room, administration offices, toilet blocks, car park, footpath and astro turf pitch.

The demolition of a temporary creche facility is also planned.

Plans outline intentions to then construct a new standalone 5,573 sqm post primary school.

Accommodation on site will provide for a special education needs unit, 12 general classrooms, a multimedia room, music room, textile room, design room, graphics room and two science laboratories.

Also planned is an engineering room, construction studies room, art room, home economics room, a library, general purpose hall, staff room, kitchenette, 3 SET Rooms, 7 administrative rooms, a multi-use hall and fitness suite.

Provision is made for the construction of a new pedestrian path, cycle path, new entrance access road, public drop-off area and a bus stop.

Three ball courts and an astroturf pitch are also planned.
