Planning approval for expansion of historic Waterford church
St. Paul's Church
The expansion of St. Paul's Church in Ardmore has received planning permission.
Approved is the construction of two extensions to the rear of the building, containing wheelchair and kitchen facilities.
New access doors are also approved, as is minor alteration works to the existing paths.
Planning reports outlined that the primary objective of the proposal is to secure the long-term future of the church by bringing the building into fuller and more sustainable community use.
The reports state: "While the church remains an important and valued local building, the continued viability of Church of Ireland churches has significantly declined nationally, with over 500 closures recorded and a 63% reduction in churches in use within the Waterford diocese. The applicant notes that Saint Paul’s was previously threatened with closure and that its long-term survival depends on establishing a sustainable mix of uses."
It is understood that the church will continue functioning as a place of worship while also accommodating compatible community and cultural uses.
