Waterford City and County Council has granted planning permission for the construction of two padel courts in Mount Congreve Gardens, provided the developers ‘Padel 100’ follow the conditions outlined by the Council.
The plans, originally submitted in September 2025, had their progress delayed as the Council requested further information on the site’s architectural heritage and flood-proofing measures.
Under the guidelines stipulated by the Council, the developers must ensure the courts cease operations before 10.00pm and inform the council of the intricacies of the court’s lighting and fencing set-up.
The Mount Congreve estate previously welcomed the development.
“This development marks another step forward in enhancing the amenities and leisure facilities available to the public, building on the gardens’ reputation as a destination for health, wellbeing, and recreation,” said a spokesperson for the estate.
“By introducing one of the fastest-growing racket sports in the world, Mount Congreve is continuing a long tradition of racket sports on the estate while bringing fresh life to the old, disused tennis court area.
“This project reflects the ongoing vision to expand opportunities for people to enjoy the gardens and estate in new and engaging ways.
“The addition of padel will complement the existing walking trails, garden experiences, and outdoor activities, ensuring Mount Congreve remains a place where heritage, nature, and modern recreation meet.”
